Just the right book for me to read right now; avoid, cozy mystery that’s not too maudlin includes good humor and people to root for。

4。5。 I enjoyed this book, it was very twisty and surprising。

I like the characters and that the chapters are all quite short, however, I was quite disappointed by the story line。 Half way through I just wanted for it to be over。 Can’t say I was a fan of the ending either。

I had been listening to this audiobook for a few days and only got 18% in before I had to give up。 It took forever to get to the murder and there are way to many characters constantly getting introduced。 I found the author to be much more interested in the characters than the plot, and with the constant introduction to new characters, it made the story that much harder to follow。

A lot of interesting little plots going on in this book and twists that unfold you wouldn't imagine when reading! Definitely peaks your curiosity and keeps you reading till the end, although I found it took a little while to get to the unravelling, it was thoroughly enjoyable all the same。 A lot of interesting little plots going on in this book and twists that unfold you wouldn't imagine when reading! 3。5 stars。 This was a suggestion from my bookclub and what an interesting setting for a murder mystery- a murder mystery solving club in a retirement community。 For sure expect a series on this。 Parts of it might be predictable but overall not a bad read。 Towards the end, I think the author kind of lost his flow。 A murder mystery to me should be a hook line and sinker- this was a not so grippy hook, line。。。more lines。。then a half hearted sinker。 (Not a fishing person, excuse the poor analogy)。 B 3。5 stars。 This was a suggestion from my bookclub and what an interesting setting for a murder mystery- a murder mystery solving club in a retirement community。 For sure expect a series on this。 Parts of it might be predictable but overall not a bad read。 Towards the end, I think the author kind of lost his flow。 A murder mystery to me should be a hook line and sinker- this was a not so grippy hook, line。。。more lines。。then a half hearted sinker。 (Not a fishing person, excuse the poor analogy)。 But you get the point。 Do I recommend- sure, if u dont have much going on pick it up and breeze through it。 。。。more

2。5/3 stars。 Had higher expectations but still thought parts were very good。 I thought there were too many characters and perspectives and I couldn’t keep up with who was who the whole time。 The pace was a little slow but it got better towards the end。 I thought certain stories told about characters pasts were well done and sentimental but they didn’t do a whole lot for the overall plot。 Glad I finally got round to reading it though。

Imagine an Agatha Christie novel, possibly the witty Poirot with a sharp sense of humour and the no-nonsense Marple, put together in the form of four septuagenarians, Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron and Ibrahim。 Perhaps, you get an idea about how enjoyable the Thursday Murder Club may get when at Cooper’s Chase, these old and not so old group witnesses not one but two murders in their peaceful retirement abode。Being an ardent Agatha Christie fanatic (more like worshipper), I was quite sceptical about the Imagine an Agatha Christie novel, possibly the witty Poirot with a sharp sense of humour and the no-nonsense Marple, put together in the form of four septuagenarians, Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron and Ibrahim。 Perhaps, you get an idea about how enjoyable the Thursday Murder Club may get when at Cooper’s Chase, these old and not so old group witnesses not one but two murders in their peaceful retirement abode。Being an ardent Agatha Christie fanatic (more like worshipper), I was quite sceptical about the idea of having to read a murder mystery by Richard Osman, given this is his first book so, in the dynamic genre of murder and thriller, but I think I will admit to laughing out loud yet pouring over this book and sticking with it like a leech, because no jokes, this is actually great! My scepticism was taken over by absolute marvel as beautifully the narrative shifts from the common perspective to the perspective of Joyce, who is a warm lady with delicious baking skills。 Elizabeth (my personal favourite) is your typical type A personality with a meticulous eye to detail, the one who knows everything and can find everything from the Mariana Trench to Timbuktu; basically the mother of the Thursday Murder Club。 Ibrahim, the psychologist and avid fitness maniac who takes his pilates very seriously is sure to work out every detail and put together the piece and piece of the mystery with the help of Ron, the once famous boxer of Britain who now enjoys the retirement and makes sure his fame is constant。 With these, highly dubious characters, of Cooper Chase, the Thursday Murder Club is thoroughly enjoyable as the group solves their first live case which seeks to bring out the very unexpected secrets of their own people and the seemingly peaceful retirement village。 。。。more

This puts me very much in mind of the 100 Year Old Man books in its style, and that's not a bad thing。Written both in the third and the first person, it observes events from the point of view of an outsider and also as one of the characters of the story。The setting is a retirement village that has been built on the site of a former convent, but without disturbing the original location。 Now, an unscrupulous developer has plans for expansion, very much against everyone else's wishes, and sets abou This puts me very much in mind of the 100 Year Old Man books in its style, and that's not a bad thing。Written both in the third and the first person, it observes events from the point of view of an outsider and also as one of the characters of the story。The setting is a retirement village that has been built on the site of a former convent, but without disturbing the original location。 Now, an unscrupulous developer has plans for expansion, very much against everyone else's wishes, and sets about achieving it by any means possible, including uprooting the last resting places of the former nuns。A violent death results in the investigation by the local police, and The Thursday Murder Club, formed of residents of the village。 Inevitably, the two start working together, initially reluctantly and then out of mutual respect。 But, are their objectives compatible?Brilliant book! At last, a novel that lives up to all the hype and genuinely is very funny。 I was expecting the humour to be good, given who wrote it, but it’s also exceptionally well observed and written。 As a whodunnit it has all the necessary components and a good few extra twists in the tail。 Writing a murder novel where the amateur detectives are around 80 years old living in sheltered housing always risks being patronising, cliched or full of maudlin stereotypes。 Instead I found myself recognising my pare At last, a novel that lives up to all the hype and genuinely is very funny。 I was expecting the humour to be good, given who wrote it, but it’s also exceptionally well observed and written。 As a whodunnit it has all the necessary components and a good few extra twists in the tail。 Writing a murder novel where the amateur detectives are around 80 years old living in sheltered housing always risks being patronising, cliched or full of maudlin stereotypes。 Instead I found myself recognising my parents and grandparents and so many of their complex, amusing and difficult experiences as they aged。 The characters earn and are given respect as adults, but the challenges they have to face with age are not trivialised or glossed over。 Very entertaining, very funny and at times also very sad 。。。more

I have to admit that this was slow in the beginning but once I got into it I began to enjoy it。 Residents of a senior residence form a Thursday murder club to solve cold cases but when murders occur where they live they investigate to solve the murders。 Since this is the first in a series I think it is to introduce us to the characters。 Each of he four main characters have their strengths and weaknesses。 I did find it amazing to have so many deaths at one time and also sad that senior citizens c I have to admit that this was slow in the beginning but once I got into it I began to enjoy it。 Residents of a senior residence form a Thursday murder club to solve cold cases but when murders occur where they live they investigate to solve the murders。 Since this is the first in a series I think it is to introduce us to the characters。 Each of he four main characters have their strengths and weaknesses。 I did find it amazing to have so many deaths at one time and also sad that senior citizens can be ignored 。 。。。more

Thanks to my pal Kevin, who is much better read than I am, I know to describe this book as a "cozy mystery。" That's not necessarily the type of book I read frequently; I mostly checked this one out because I've been watching a lot of british TV over the pandemic and ya know, Richard Osman wrote a book! The writing super sounds like him, fwiw。I feel like this book was really well-written, but the story itself is a little uninteresting, if that makes sense。 And it's hard to say whether that is because of me (with my previously-mentioned tendency to not read cozy mysteries) or because of the book。 I think you are supposed to feel a bit of a thrill with the reveals and all and I just didn't feel that。 I didn't really feel like I could solve the mystery, which is part of a thrill of a whodunnit, and I didn't necessarily want to。 I will say that I do think a few things are on the book: it's a little over long。 I know I frequently say that about books, but I believe it。 Here, there are so many moments that I think you are supposed to *feel* are red herrings, but if you have so many of them, you can't be as attached to any theory。 You don't have enough space to learn the necessary background to believe a theory before being told exactly why a theory is not right。 There were also ~100,000 characters。 There is a bit at the end where a character reveals something huge to another character and I honestly could not remember who the person it was being revealed to was。 Again, yeah, you can't become invested in any scenario build on the character if you don't know the character。 It's just so complex, but the complexity makes it very wide, but not very deep。 You have to pay so much attention to get all the right points, but the attention isn't necessarily rewarded with feeling more engaged。I think that feedback would make you think I don't like this book and/or that I think it's bad and I really don't feel that way。 I actually think the charm of the characters, the tone, and the quality of the writing is compelling。 Ultimately, I'd just need to be a bit better practiced at this genre to connect with it better。 。。。more
